Melbourne Stars Bringing The Sizzle To Wellington

Melbourne Stars Bringing The Sizzle To Wellington

The Basin Reserve will witness another historic cricket event in early December when it plays host to a double-header Twenty20 day featuring the Wellington Firebirds and Wellington Blaze playing against the Melbourne Stars teams from the KFC BBL and Rebel WBBL.  It will be the first time that both men’s and women’s teams from the hugely successful Big Bash competition have played in New Zealand.

The “Basin Blast”, brought to you by CricHQ, will be played on Wednesday 7 December, with the Wellington Blaze v Melbourne Stars Rebel WBBL team at midday, followed by the Wellington Firebirds v Melbourne Stars KFC BBL team at 4pm.  CricHQ will live-score the games ball by ball on its digital platform.

The Melbourne Stars will be bringing their strongest available line-up, captained by David Hussey and including T20 specialists Luke Wright (England), Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Beer, Tom Triffit, and Evan Gulbis, (a number of talented up-and-coming players will add further excitement), whilst Australian captain Meg Lanning will lead an impressive outfit including fellow Southern Star Kristen Beams.

Head Coach of the Melbourne Stars Stephen Fleming said “This is a fantastic opportunity to play against quality opposition in the lead up to BBL|06.  I’m very familiar with the Basin and the Wellington Firebirds, and I know this is exactly the sort of preparation we’re looking for before we launch our BBL|06 campaign.”

Bruce Edgar, Head Coach of the Wellington Firebirds said that the opportunity to play competitive opposition very early in their T20 campaign was too good to pass up.  “We’re always looking for ways to extend our players and prepare as hard as possible, and the chance to pit ourselves against the Stars is just what we’re looking for.”

Cricket Wellington Chief Executive Peter Clinton said the visit was the result of several months of discussions with the Melbourne Stars, and the undertaking had several objectives.  “In addition to preparing our Firebirds & Blaze teams as well as possible, we want to put on a unique event for Wellington cricket fans and help celebrate cricket in the capital.  Just before Xmas is a great time for businesses and fans to come along and get an early summer taste of top level cricket, enjoy some hospitality and witness some of the players that previously we’ve only seen on TV.  We’re fortunate to have the world’s largest digital platform for cricket, CricHQ, and other great local partners working with us on the project, and we’re looking forward to doing something unique and fun for Wellington.”

Clint Cooper, Chief Executive of the Melbourne Stars said “This is a fantastic opportunity for our club.  Not only does this provide a wonderful platform to prepare our teams in the best possible conditions, against such a quality outfit, but importantly lays the foundation for ongoing relationship between our respective organisations.

We’re genuinely excited about playing at the Basin and putting on a fantastic show for the people of Wellington.  I am sure all Wellingtonians will get behind this unique event and enjoy what we expect to be a wonderful celebration for the City of Wellington.”

Tickets will be on sale through Ticketek, from 3 November.
